It took us so long to get motivated & make a City Spy Map for the city of Wien. As I like many people was under the impression that it was a cold, expensive, boring city for geriatrics' & classical music weirdo's. That was our first mistake! Wien (=Oh Vienna) is a misrepresented Eden for youth & alter cultures (though the old stuff is pretty groovy too). It's a lot of fun here, a beautiful, peaceful city & the locals are a pleasant whacky bunch. We have chosen some places & intrests that should change your mind about Wien for ever! Vienna oh Vienna

In the City Center From the Opera & the tourist info, the pedestrianized Kärntner Str. runs towards Vienna's prime landmark, the St. Stephen's Cathedral, almost continually under construction since 1147. The north tower still remains unfinished, but the views from the south tower are well worth the hard climb. The catacombs in the basement contain the innards of 56 royal's & several infants. Praise the statue of the "God of bad teeth" (at the outside of the Albertine Choir) & your pains will be cured. Or not.

Straight on, Naglergasse heads to the Am Hof & Freyung squares. North of St. Stephen's square is Rotenturm Str with Vienna's best ice cream (Zanoni & Zanoni). At its end is Schwedenplatz & the infamous Bermuda Triangle drinking circle! ..................... Espresso - Café bar, The old so stylie soda fountain vibe with original bar furnishings, with that funky red leather thing going down . . . .

Wunderbar , There are two legends surrounding this cafe, # 1. The first Wiener to have relieved himself on an olive tree on this very spot in 12BC is said to have said it. # 2. The water well stood here & there was an evil eye within. Any one who looked in turned into a stone. Then the local boy Bar cleverly held a mirror over the entrance & the beastly eye was turned to a stone it's self too. His girlfriend is said to have said it later too! SO back to the main plot….. This is a literary cafe of sorts..........CROSSFIELD´s AUSTRALIAN PUB. No Kangaroos in Austria, you sure? Along the Ring Road Some 2 centuries ago, Vienna's enormous city walls & bastions were replaced by the wide & tree-lined Ring Road around the historical center. Along the Ring Road are the reminders of former Austro-Hungarian grandezza, including the Hofburg Palace (now housing the Spanish Riding School, the Vienna Boys' Choir, the National Library, seven museums, a butterfly house, the president's office, an OECD dependance & a conference center), the State Opera, the Burg Theater, the City Hall, the Parliament Building, the newly restored Museums quarter, the Karls Church (tell them you just want to pray or you'll pay an entrance fee), the Votiv Church, the stock exchange, four universities & practically all 5-star hotels etc etc.. A tramway loop around the center (lines 1 & 2) is an absolute must for every visi tor.

Prater & Danube Island. The Prater fun-fair is a Viennese institution. Its landmark is the 65 meter high Giant Ferris Wheel, towering over the 200 booths, the ghostly trains (as if u needed another one of those), go-cart's, grotto railways & the merry-go-rounds & rounds. There's a large dogshit park behind it. 21 km long & up to 250 m wide, the Danube Island is a heaven for joggers, cyclists & skaters, sunbathers hang out on Copa Kagrana Beach. Summer evenings are celebrated with steak, wine & dance till dawn. Annual highlight is the Donauinselfest (Austria's biggest open air festival) in 2003: June 19-22, with all kinds of music performed on countless stages. Free entrance. Beyond the island, a new commercial area booms up around the Vienna International Center & the United Nations building. Plenty straight lines for dull architects...................................... Hundertwasserhaus http:// www.kunsthauswien.com Despite architects calling it a "painted barn" (maybe because Friedensreich Hundertwasser - who hated straight lines - wasn't an architect himself), this social housing project @ Loweng \ Kegelgasse is Wien's most popular modern sight Please mind that this is NOT a museum, regurlar people actually LIVE there, so don't throw peanuts at them (= behave). If you can't get enough of it, Mr. Wasser has his own museum with a nice cafe & shop on Weißgerber Lände (just 5 minutes walk away) Open: 10.oo-19.oo & the shite processing plant at U4/U6 station Spittelau

As this was the last seat of the last great Empire so far…… then it is only fitting that the evidence of that is over powering. In the same frame as this is the debut point of what is now know as classical music then u know … the hills are alive. Hey I dig it u don't give a fuck about that stuff… well u should push Ur self along a bit & get your arse into the fascinating museums & try to catch one of these fiddle gigs while you are here.. The Snitzel… well there & here u have it.. first u grab a pig or a chicken.. Then with a suitable slice selected u beat it with a hammer. Then slap it into the flour then the egg & smother it with breadcrumbs.. If u doesn't want to enjoy it raw (Austrian Sushi) u have to fry it in too much oil. Serve with fries & mayo & 2 slivers of pickled cucumber.. Yummy!! Oh yes & on the side… 10 beers!

Austrians are best known for they're ridiculous mustaches, the funny leather shorts, standing on mountains….. & not so much for romance… the local term of endearment is to call your lover 'Schisel' which translates a 'my little shit'… love!!

Belvedere Palace .Tram D or 71 from Schwarzenbergplatz (the big construction right between Karlsplatz and Stadtpark tube stations)
The summer residence of Prince Eugene, is an illustrious creation of Baroque architecture. It was designed as a place of recreation, not for everyday use. The museums in the upper & lower palaces offer an excellent survey of Austrian art from the middle ages to the present day. In the Upper Belvedere you can see works by Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka, Renoir & Monet.

On a lighter note and if u stick around town long enough……
Zentralfriedhof & St. Marx Cem. For both take tram 71 from Schwarzenbergplatz. Death may come for free in other countries, but an Austrian who can't afford a luxurious funeral is said to have wasted his life. There aren't Pyramids (not yet), but just about everything else. The Central Cemetery was opened in 1874 & is Vienna's largest burial ground by far. 2,500,000 people have been put six feet under during the last 128 years (even now people are still dying to get in there). There is a special section (Ehrengräber) where composers, writers, artists & politicians are buried., E.g. Brahms, Schubert, Strauß & Beethoven. Not as large & just a few stops away, but more beautiful is the St. Marx Cemetery (Mozart is buried here). get off tram just before the highway bridge.

From Grinzing, take Bus 38A to the top of the Kahlenberg. Enjoy a splendid view over the city. The city to which by now I'm sure u have open'd your heart & left large lumps of your liver.
